The title of the film is spoken in a portion of the audio track of the film. It represents the monologue from a young Russian man to his English girlfriend, explaining his Vodka habit. I just don’t get it? It’s my Russian soul. Why can’t she understand? The voice we hear is of the woman. About the film it explains only the style and technique, a series of questionably related parts.
Walter Ungerer is a longtime filmmaker and artist beginning with the underground film scene of NYC in the early 1960s. He began producing his own work in 1963. In 1969 he moved to Vermont, then established Dark Horse Films, a non-profit production company in 1976 in order to produce feature length experimental narrative films. In 2003 he moved to Maine where he continues to make films albeit shorter and computer assisted. With fifty years of filmmaking, video, computer, and media experience; Ungerer’s works have been shown at museums, festivals and competitions throughout the world including Berlin Film Festival Black Box; Filmmuseum, Amsterdam; MoMA, NY; Tate. Great Britain; and Venice Biennale.

Katie Goodwin (UK/AUS) is a London-based artist filmmaker and graduate of Goldsmiths, and Wimbledon Colleges of Art. Her work has screened at Swedenborg Film Festival, Flatpack festival & Animated Exeter, UK, Wro 15th Media Art Biennale, Poland and Les Sommets Du Cinema D’Animation, Canada. Bang Bang won the Grand Prix Award at Abstracta Film Festival, Italy in 2013 and Small Wonders was nominated for Best Documentary at London Short Film Festival 2015. A hyper-structuralist montage of novels adapted into screenplays for seminal films flash past at 1 frame per book cover, cut to a meditative narration. The script describes the conditions of the famous physiological test ‘the troop effect’, that demonstrates how the left and right sides of the brain separate language and colour.
PHIL COY’s work collages concepts rooted in the radical art practices of the 1960s with the language, architecture and systems of today’s culture of global commerce. His practice explores the languages, materiality and histories of representation, often feeding back the structural processes involved in making work into is presentation. He employs a wide range of media, including architectural installations, audio publications, films, photography and generative performances.

A piece from tragic reality, it’s impossible to show the facets of a violent conflict all at once: here we see, through thick mess of pixels, Israeli soldiers forcefully leading two Palestinian boys. The video, originally posted online by activists, has its digital code broken, destroyed, creating glitchy visual landscape, heightened by slow motion and sound work. The disintegration of humaneness is revealed to (Western) audiences through audio-visual signal. The activist women filming, keep asking the soldiers where to do they take the children. But they only get an answer from one of the boys. His name is Nour, ‘light’ in Arabic.
An experimental filmmaker/video artist, based in London, UK. Received a B.A in Film & Video from Tel Aviv University in 1997, and graduated in 2000 from The New School for Social Research in New York City USA, with a M.A in Media Studies. This animated film rests on the idea that digital media is like a transparent, thin layer of skin that shields our notion of self, and also the ability to transform and change. Like a self-portrait made of assemblages, the film investigates coexisting multiple digital identities to convey the message that “the best interface is no interface”. Assuming that the digital phenomenon is reshaping our culture, the film aims to synthesize and decode the compression of an over-connected modern society by visualizing that which is lost in translation and the art of error.
I am a digital artist who is constantly exploring avenues of expression that combine phenomenology, psychology and philosophy to translate the art of error. As a child of the 80’s, I was born into color. Since then, the world has been digitized and the speed of information is overloading our minds. This digitizing phenomenon is like a transparent thin layer of skin; it shields our notion of self, and also the ability to transform and reshape our identity and body. We are at a “mirror phrase” stage of virtual reality and I wonder how many mega-pixels can define our existence. As part of that movement, my art synthesizes and decodes the compression of our over-connected modern society and self awareness.

Rapidly moving through a series of associative images, visual puns and plays on words, HAM OVER RICE combines live action, animation, pictorial text, narration and sound to play off of the Chinese myth of the god Houyi, an archer who saves the world but loses his immortality.
Incorporating live action film and video, performance art and animation, Ying Liu’s work combines various forms to create mental landscapes of imagined connections between words, objects, shapes and sounds in order to explore the fluidity of consciousness. Her films have screened internationally and aired on PBS. Born and raised in the Zhoushan Archipelago, China, she takes interest in linking a series of discreet parcels of thoughts. These thoughts follow a precise internal governing logic, that brings to light heretofore hidden relationships.

Sorelle Povere di Santa Chiara is a photographic portrait in response to the idea of simplicity and poverty which is the guiding principle of the Poor Clares and their ‘hidden’ life.
Filmed on location in the enclosed Monasterio di Santa Chiara, San Marino. The nuns spend the morning in the ‘laboratorio’ sewing, mending, ironing, in the garden, tending to the animals, cultivation and in the kitchen preparing the midday meal.
Nina Danino’s experimental films include First Memory (1981), Stabat Mater (1990) and “Now I am yours” (1992). The feature film Temenos (1997) is a British Film Institute DVD. Communion (2010) was shown in “From Floor to Sky” Ambika P3, London and as a film installation with Arprojx (2013). Recent exhibitions are: “..and the fig trees in the Alameda gardens” (2013), Gibraltar Garrison Library (solo), Meteorologies was shown in The National Museum, Reykjavik, Terrace in the Villa Croce Museum of Contemporary Art, Genoa, Apparitions at the Magda Bellotti Gallery PhotoEspana Madrid 2014, (solo). Sorelle Povere di Santa Chiara, multi channel sound installation was shown in Voices of the Sirens, Montagu Bastion, Gibraltar (2015). ‘Visionary Landscapes”, Black Dog (2005) is a monograph on her work, ‘…and the figtrees in the Alameda gardens”, Mousse Milan (2013) is an essay on her films. She lives and works in London.

“SoundPrint” explores the marks left by sonic frequencies. Imagery from optical soundtracks and micro photography of records play against similar signals received by sand, water, and people. Sounds of the ocean and the Midshipman are the backdrop for a rich exploration of the subtleties of transcribed sound.
Monteith McCollum is an inter-media artist working in film, sound, and sculpture. His films have screened at Festivals and Museums including The Museum of Modern Art, Hirshhorn, Wexner Center for the Arts and Festivals including SXSW, Slamdance, Hot Docs, Amsterdam & Osnabruck European Media Arts Festival. His
films have garnered dozens of festival awards including an IFP Truer than Fiction Spirit Award. Stefanie Weberhofer lives and works in Vienna. Her artistic mediums of choice are film, video, photography, live visual projections and words. In recent years Stefanie has devoted attention to working with independent and analog film and its role in contemporary art practice such as Expanded Cinema. As a member of Filmkoop Wien, an artist run film lab she curates film programmes and offers workshops. Her innovative work reveals her curiosity and enthusiasm to experiment as well as her dedication as a filmmaker.

Adrian Flury was born 1978 in Zug, Switzerland. He undertook an apprenticeship as an electrician and has studied animation at the Lucerne University of Arts (HSLU). He has been working in the field of the Moving Image since 2005.

Joel Schlemowitz is an experimental filmmaker based in Brooklyn who works in 16mm film, shadowplay, and stereographic media. He has recently completed his first feature film 78rpm, an experimental documentary about the gramophone. His short works have been shown at the Ann Arbor Film Festival, New York Film Festival, and Tribeca Film Festival and have received awards from the Chicago Underground Film Festival, The Dallas Video Festival, and elsewhere. Shows of his installation artworks include Anthology Film Archives, and Microscope Gallery. He teaches experimental filmmaking at The New School and is Resident Film Programmer and Arcane Media Specialist at the Morbid Anatomy Museum.

Gautam Valluri (born 1985, India) is an artist working with film and video. In 2014, he won The British Council India’s GREAT scholarship to study Experimental Film at Kingston University, London where he subsequently received his MA. His work has screened at the ICA and The Horse Hospital in London.

Meredith Lackey is a multimedia artist based in Los Angeles. She received a BA in Philosophy and Film/Video from Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, and an MFA in Moving Image from the University of Illinois Chicago. Her work has shown in exhibitions and film festivals including the New York Film Festival at Lincoln Center, and the Edinburgh International Film Festival. She was a 2013-2015 University Fellow of the University of Illinois Chicago, is the recipient of the UFVA Carole Fielding Grant, and is a 2014 Princess Grace Foundation Honoraria winner.

Derek Taylor’s moving image work is an amalgamation of documentary and experimental forms, consisting of films about history, travel, time, space and the nuances of perception. The overriding theme of “space” manifests itself in several contexts in his work: physical, geographical and transformative. His creative activity has continued to evolve, with a very defined interest in the hybridization of both of these forms (experimental and documentary) and a clear focus on the investigation of both the ephemeral and the permanent in the human experience. His work has been screened at a number of festivals both nationally and internationally.

A portrait of farmland in the Pacific Northwest, “Abandoned Generations” explores relationships with land and time in different generations. Told through the perspective of a female farmer in the 1940s, the film questions the distance that modern society has from the earth and how that relationship informs daily life.
Linda Fenstermaker is an experimental filmmaker, who works primarily with 16mm and Super 8mm film. In her work, Linda explores interactions and relationships between the body and landscape in discovering new avenues for female representation in film and art. The emphasis on celluloid film/photography comes from her attraction to the material aspects of creative expression and the ways in which technology enters into an art form. Her films have been shown in various film festivals and micro-cinemas worldwide, including Atlanta Film Festival, Portland Underground Film Festival, Alchemy Film Festival and Other Cinema. She currently resides in Seattle.

Sheri Wills is an artist whose work is based in film, video performance & installation. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including one-person shows at the Director’s Lounge in Berlin, the Robert Beck Memorial Cinema in NYC, and The International Experimental Cinema Exposition. Her films have been screened at venues including the London Film Festival, the International Film Festival in Rotterdam, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York and is included in the Rizzoli book, Sonic Graphics: Seeing Sound, by Matt Woolman.
Her collaborations include live video projects with music composed by Bright Sheng, Jan Jirásek, Charles Norman Mason, and Ofer Ben-Amots and video performances with music ensembles, including the NYC choral group Khorikos, the Providence String Quartet, Luna Nova New Music Ensemble, and Ensemble QAT in Montreal, at venues including Roulette in Brooklyn, the Firehouse Space in Bushwick, and the Czech Center in NYC.
She lives in New York City and is the Dean of Fine Arts at the Rhode Island School of Design.

Tessa Power’s latest film Trickster (2015) takes the viewer on an extraordinary journey with two hunters – a deerstalker and a trickster – who patrol a semi-fictional landscape until the trickster creates a weapon that causes his own demise.
Tessa Power (born 1984, Ireland) is an artist and filmmaker living and working in London. Power graduated with an MA in Fine Art Media from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2010 and was awarded with the William Coldstream Purchase Prize. Her films have been exhibited in group exhibitions and film programmes in the UK and abroad. Most recently, her short film ‘Trickster’ has screened in the BFI London Film Festival, the East End Film Festival London and Aesthetica film festival Yorkshire. In December 2014, Power completed the Fathom residency at Four Corners, London. In summer 2013 she participated in Ex-¬Voto, a project by LABA (Athens, Greece) that invited 30 international filmmakers to respond to the discontinuation of Kodak’s Ektachrome film stock. Power’s films, often investigating the subject’s relationship with the natural world and the environment, through unconventional narrative structures to create lyrical, dream-like parallel worlds for her protagonists to inhabit. Drawing on personal encounters, anecdotes and historical myths to investigate how we shape our own realities. Often filming people who live in remote areas such as the Scottish Highlands, she creates oblique narratives imagining alternative existences in marginal worlds.

Metropolitan Triangle Garden

“Metropolitan Triangle Garden” is an experimental 3D animation, in which carefully preserved Classical sculptures from the museum participate in a self-destructive performance triggered by software glitches, distortions, and misused simulation, turning the gallery space into a madhouse theater with both classical beauty and digital chaos. The animation is an attempt to connect the sense of space, history, turmoil, and transformation to the idea of technological sublime.
Rui Hu is an artist and filmmaker born in China and living in the United States. Working with 3D animation, video, and digital image, he hopes to create poetic or unsettling experiences that could channel some fleeting or buried human emotion. He is a graduate of the film program at New York University and a MFA candidate in the media arts program at University of California, Los Angeles.

Renowned theatre director and associate director of the Olympic opening ceremony Paulette Randall MBE was the executive producer along with award winning writer, producer, director James Rogan (Monty Python – Meaning of Live, BBC Storyville).

Here are the playful recordings of a naturalist—the observations of a difficult object. As the study accelerates and numerous cinematographic strategies are employed, the information gathered becomes noise; all these measurements become scribbles.
Ben Balcom is film and video maker currently living, working, and teaching in Milwaukee, WI. His work in film and digital (and digital-film hybrids) investigates ordinary objects and affects through the lens of speculative realism. His films have screened at venues such as the Ann Arbor Film Festival, the Media City Film Festival and the Festival of (In)Appropriation. In addition to making films and videos, Ben also is the curator and co-founder of a neighborhood cinema in Milwaukee called Microlights, which specializes in avant-garde film and video work (www.microlightscinema.com).

Employing the structure of a slide show, the film chronicles a Canadian family’s vacation in Hawaii, USA through a series of picturesque tableaus, which gradually reveal the tedious, hypnotic quality of the exotic getaway.
A Toronto-based director and film editor, working in documentary and fiction film. Martin is lead editor for the Seventh Art video magazine. He is a graduate of Concordia University’s film production program and teller of tall tales. Martin’s previous films include “The Talent Scout” (2015) and post-apocalyptic short “Soledad” (2009).

The Janus Restraint: Buildings and Houses

Barry Anderson is an artist based in Kansas City, working in video, photography, and installation. His work has been featured in over 30 solo exhibitions and over 80 group exhibitions around the US and abroad. His work is also included in numerous public and private collections. In 2009, his video animations were featured in a city-wide public art retrospective and accompanying monograph organized and produced by Light Work in Syracuse, New York. His current focus is on an ambitious, multi-faceted narrative called The Janus Restraint.

Shot in Super 8, the film documents an aimless walk through one of Kyoto’s former outcaste neighbourhoods, which continues to exist below normal Japanese living standards.
Michael Lyons, originally from Caithness, is a researcher and artist based in Kyoto, Japan. He is currently Professor of Image Arts and Sciences at Ritsumeikan University.

Traces/Legacy uses a device called a film recorder to print a series of digital still images onto 35mm film. Discarded Christmas trees, colorfully arranged flea market finds, a museum of animal kills, microscopic views of kitchenware, and other overlooked cultural artifacts are interwoven with flickering journeys through mysterious, shadowy realms.
As with my earlier film Traces, the 35mm projector can only show a portion of the image at a time, so the viewer sees alterations between the top and bottom half of each frame. The images also overlap onto the optical sound area of the film, generating their own unique sounds.

Cup of Stars

A vivid tableau of tenderness, Cup of Stars finds two brothers under a cool night sky, fishing for stars and supernovas. Using dream logic under their own bizarre terms, The Betschart Bros. subtly express through a smearing of light and the telling of folk tales, ideas of growing up as siblings in Southern California.

The Betschart Bros. (Ryan, born 1985 + Tyler, born 1988) have been making lo-fi video and film works for over 15 years. They have been described as “The sexiest experimental brother duo since George and Mike Kuchar.”
‘We believe in making work for ourselves, and hope that our audience can find an emotional connection to the ideas and situations we present through our art pieces and video works.’
Throughout their career, Ryan and Tyler have made hundreds of video and film pieces, each born out of necessity – 1. desire to play. 2. desire to self express. The brothers are forever compelled to put into auditory and visual form their ideas and feelings; words and sentences alone do not do them justice. Only through the collision of image and sound do the brothers Betschart feel at peace with their hearts and with their heads. The process of making, for the Betschart Bros., is as important as the finished product.
Through this very natural desire to express themselves the Betschart Bros. have made a career in film and video. Both brothers hold BA degrees in Visual Arts from the University of California, San Diego; Ryan graduated in 2013 with an MFA in Film and Video from Cal Arts – Tyler will graduate with his MFA from Cal Arts in the year 2015. Both brothers are freelance teachers, editors, writers, video makers and sound workers. The brothers have taught film classes for K – 12, College level, and various workshops. Their work has been shown in various museum galleries and film festivals around the world.
